Wärtsilä to deliver methanol engines to China

Wärtsilä is to provide methanol-fuelled auxiliary engines for twelve new container vessels - five for Cosco Shipping Lines and seven for Orient Overseas Container Line.

This order, the largest in the China’s maritime sector for methanol-fuelled ships, includes three eight-cylinder and two six-cylinder Wärtsilä 32M engines per vessel, and was placed in December 2023. Additionally, CWEC, a Wärtsilä joint venture in Shanghai, will supply selective catalytic reduction (SCR) exhaust cleaning systems and alternators.

These vessels reduce CO₂ and GHG emissions and support the maritime industry's move towards decarbonisation with green methanol as a sustainable fuel. The ships will be built at the Nantong Cosco KHI and Dalian Cosco KHI ship engineering yards, with operations set to begin in 2026. (pb)
