Adelaide–Tarcoola rail update goes ahead

The completion of 10,000 perfect welds to create new rail tracks on the Adelaide-Tarcoola rail upgrade acceleration project in South Australia has reached a milestone.

The multi-million dollar upgrade will enable heavier and faster trains to travel along the 720 km stretch on the east-west interstate rail link. The work being done involves a flashbutt welder charging two lengths of rail so they are joined with a current, and then heating them up to about 2,000ºC and applying pressure so they melt together.

The next stage of the works will see these rails connected to make longer lengths using a field flashbutt welder, before the rail is laid. (ben)
