Dillon intermodal terminal opening in early 2018
South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) has held a ground breaking ceremony to mark the start of a new inland port in Dillon in South Carolina (USA). The intermodal facility will open early in 2018 to support growing cargo volumes between the port of Charleston SC and markets throughout the Carolinas, Northeast and Midwest.
Dillon is expected to handle 45,000 containers annually via an existing CSX mainline. Today, companies use either trucks or rail to convey their products to inland ports, and then rail lines take the cargo to marine terminals for export.
SCPA already operates an inland port in Greer from where Norfolk Southern Railway transports cargo to Charleston today. (ben)
