Facelift for Murray Basin rail network
Work to revitalise more than 1,000 km of the railfreight network in Victoria (Australia) will be underway within weeks. The country’s government has awarded the contract for stages two, three and four of the AUD 440 million (EUR 399 million) Murray Basin rail project to JV McConnell Dowell Martinus Rail.
The refurbishment project will standardise and upgrade the track from broad gauge to standard gauge, increase axle loading from 19 t to 21 t on the network, apart from Ouyen to Murrayville line, and begin the work to reopen the 87 km rail line between Maryborough and Ararat.
The project will allow more exports to be carried to the ports in Portland, Geelong and Melbourne. (ben)
