New planning tool for Panama Canal

After the widening and reopening of the Panama Canal in June 2016, the Panama Canal Authority (PCA) is now set to adopt new technology for planning, scheduling and optimising ship transits that has been developed by the Germany company Quintiq.

The authority will use the Quintiq IT solution to compile an operating plan that integrates all the requisite resources, such as tugboats and pilots.

Panama Canal customers stand to benefit from the new IT solution too. Vessel waiting times will be reduced and the number of available ship slots will be increased, which, in turn, improves planning reliability.

The Quintiq system is to be fully integrated into the Panama Canal’s operations within the next two years; the module to manage ship transits is slated to go into service at the end of September 2017. (kd)
