PTC implementation steadily taking over
The US railroad Union Pacific (UP) continues to stride ahead with the implementation of positive train control (PTC). Just over a quarter of track segments are PTC-ready.
These 59 track segments – 26% of all track segments - are equipped with wayside devices (signals, switches, radios) and have defined GPS coordinates. The PTC-ready segments cover a wide swath of the rail service provider’s western region, from Southern California to Portland WA; from Portland to Pocatello ID; and from Roseville CA, through Reno to Elko NV.
Furthermore, 64% of required locomotives are equipped with PTC technology, and 12% of the railroad's required route kilometres are in PTC operation. (ben)
