Rail electrification axing costs
In Uzbekistan, the electrification of the 90 km Dehkanabad-Karshi rail section – part of the Tashkent-Samarkand-Termez line - has been carried out. The electrification of the 140.8 km Samarkand - Karshi section was completed in 2015. As of January 2017, some 1,700 km of lines have been electrified, according to Uzbekistan Railways (UR).
The work that is currently being carried out to electrify the Karshi-Termez section should be finished this year. Electrification of this section, which runs closed to the Afghan border, will enable UR to switch from diesel locomotives to electric traction. This, in turn, will reduce freight transport costs by around a third. (ben)
