Collaboration to explore CNSL-based biofuel

United European Car Carriers (UECC) is leading a collaboration with Lloyd’s Register Fobas, Wärtsilä, and ACT Group to evaluate the potential of cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL)-based biofuel, known as FSI.100, for maritime use.

The partnership aims to address concerns about the viability of CNSL-based biofuels and ensure a sustainable, traceable, and accountable supply chain. FSI.100 has shown promise with significant greenhouse gas savings and high-quality fuel properties, earning approval for sea trials as a 30% blend component in marine fuel oil.

UECC's collaboration highlights the importance of thorough evaluation and transparency in sustainable fuel procurement, especially following recent incidents related to biofuel blending in the Rotterdam area. The company emphasises the need for structured assessment processes to gain acceptance for new biofuels and calls for an industry-wide collaboration in advancing sustainable shipping solutions.
