Loss of a veteran

Both pilots died in the crash of a DC-4 shortly after take-off at Fairbanks Airport (FAI) last Tuesday, 23 April 2024.

The 79-year-old Alaska Air Fuel aircraft was carrying 12,100 litres of fuel oil to the village of Kobuk (OBU), almost 500 km to the northwest. A few minutes after take-off, the pilots made radio contact and reported a fire on board, whereupon the aircraft, which had climbed to 460 m, lost altitude, went out of control and crashed in an inaccessible area on the left bank of the Tanana River.

The NTSB is now conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash. (ah)
