New CO2 emission standards for HDVs
Yesterday, 13 May 2024, the council of the European Union adopted the regulation on CO2 emission standards for heavy-duty vehicles (HDV), amending and strengthening the existing EU rules.
The revisions will make almost all new heavy-duty vehicles with certified CO2 emissions – including smaller trucks and trailers – subject to emission reduction targets, the council said.
The existing 2025 target set at a 15% emissions reduction for heavy trucks weighing over 16 t. The regulation further establishes new targets such as reducing emissions by 45% from 2030 (increased from 30%), by 65% from 2035 and by 90% from 2040. (ben)
