Jan 16, 2026 at 10:05 AMCargill has taken another step towards decarbonizing shipping with the commissioning of the vessel „Brave Pioneer.“ The ship, which serves as the first of five chartered dual-fuel cargo vessels, was recently unveiled. This initiative is part of Cargill’s strategy to reduce carbon emissions in bulk freight transport, as the company reports.
First Voyage with Green Methanol
„Brave Pioneer“ was built by Tsuneishi Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and is owned by Mitsui & Co. Ltd. The vessel is capable of operating on both conventional marine fuels and green methanol, a fuel considered a more environmentally friendly alternative. According to estimates, the use of green methanol can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 70% compared to conventional fuel, the company states.
The ship recently departed the Philippines and will be refueled with green methanol in Singapore before continuing to Western Australia and then to Europe. During this maiden voyage, Cargill plans operational tests to assess the readiness of green methanol. Additionally, the possibilities for tracking and verifying environmental attributes will be explored. Another goal is to gauge market interest.
