Trans.eu introduces “SafePay”
Jan 22, 2026 at 11:36 AMNorfolk Southern has opened a new intermodal corridor called „East Edge,“ connecting Chicago with New England. This initiative, realized with an investment of $64 million, aims to reduce transport times by up to 10 hours and increase the capacity of the rail network, according to the company. The new corridor replaces a single-stack route with a double-stack route.
Expansion of Capacities in the Northeast
The introduction of „East Edge“ represents a step in Norfolk Southern’s strategy to offer double-stack services across its 22-state network. Norfolk Southern expects growth in intermodal traffic over the next two years, driven by the project. The rising consumer demand, the growth of e-commerce, and the expansion of distribution centers have exceeded the freight capacity in New England, according to Norfolk Southern. This has led shippers to increasingly rely on truck transportation.
