Gaps in the Supply Chain
Jan 26, 2026 at 9:15 AMAeronautical Engineers, Inc. (AEI) has announced that Hainan Airlines Co., Ltd. based in Haikou has begun the conversion of its second B737-800SF freighter. This conversion is part of a contract for a total of three freighter conversions. The modification of the aircraft with MSN 32603 started on January 5, 2026. Grand China Aviation Maintenance Co., Ltd. (GCAM) is carrying out the necessary conversion and maintenance work. The start of the conversion of the third aircraft is scheduled for immediately after the completion of work on MSN 32603.
According to AEI, Tianjin Air Cargo has since taken over the original agreement with Hainan for the second conversion and will operate the aircraft to support the airline’s growing cargo operations.
Technical Details of the Conversion
The converted B737-800SF offers a main deck payload of up to 23,904 kg and features eleven full-height container positions (88” x 125”) as well as an additional position for an AEP/AEH. The conversion also includes new floor beams behind the wing box and a large main cargo door measuring 86” x 137”, equipped with a single vent door system.
AEI’s thoughtful design allows containers to be loaded 16.5 inches behind the front door frame, providing ground staff with ample space for maneuvering and minimizing potential collisions with the door and the aircraft. Additionally, the B737-800SF includes a flexible Ancra Cargo Loading System, a rigid 9g barrier, five additional seats as standard, an onboard kitchen, and a full restroom.
