68,000 wagons to have digital technology by 2020

The German carrier DB Cargo is powering ahead with the digitalisation of its freight wagon fleet: the 34,000th wagon with state-of-the-art telematics and smart sensors rolled out of the refitting facility in Seelze near Hanover (Germany) on 27 August 2019.

By 2020, the company’s full fleet of about 68,000 wagons in Germany will be equipped with digital technology. To this end, DB Cargo will be investing a high two-digit million amount until 2020. GPS and sensor technology bring a range of benefits for DB Cargo’s customers.

The upgraded wagons use mobile telephony to transmit signals during the journey, providing information on the load condition, temperature and humidity or movements of sensitive cargo inside the wagon. (ben)
