95th electric locomotive rolls out of Transnet factory
The South African railfreight operator Transnet has completed the construction of 95 class 20E electric locomotives. The country's president, Jacob Zuma, celebrated the successful production of the first batch of electric locomotives produced at Transnet’s manufacturing and engineering facility in Koedoespoort, Pretoria.
85 of the locomotives were built in South Africa and ten were manufactured at China South Rail's (CSR) plant in China. The new traction provides a massive boost to Transnet Freight Rail’s drive to increase volumes and efficiencies. The production programme was completed in a record twelve months. (ben)
