A first for China

China’s first hydrogen fuel cell hybrid locomotive, jointly built by CRRC Datong and State Power Investment Corporation, has entered service on the Jinzhou-Baiyinhua Railway in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. The locomotive’s designed speed reaches 80km/h.

The engine can operate continuously for 24.5 hours with a full load of hydrogen and a traction load of up to 5,000 t. The locomotive will be used in the Jinzhou-Baiyinhua Railway's shunting, fetching and delivery operations.

China Railways calculates that, compared with diesel locomotives, the hydrogen fuel cell hybrid locomotive reduces carbon emissions by about 80 kg for every 10,000 t/km. (ben)
