A future for the port of Belawan

According to Reuters a new partnership has been set up to jointly develop the Belawan New Container Terminal (BNCT) in Sumatra. The partners are the Indonesian state-owned port operator Pelindo, a consortium based on the country's sovereign wealth fund INA and the Dubai-based terminal operator DP World.

The agreement, whose value was not disclosed, is part of a USD 7.5 billion partnership between the Indonesia Investment Authority (INA) and DP World, as revealed by a joint statement from Pelindo and the INA. According to the agreement Pelindo and the consortium will manage the BNCT, and transform the port by more doubling terminal capacity to 1,4 million teu annually, adding direct calls and improving connectivity with smaller ports.

The port of Belawan, on the northeastern coast of the island of Sumatra, is currently a feeder for other large ports in the vicinity, including in neighbouring Singapore and Malaysia. (sh)
