A milestone for rail traffic in Gothenburg

After more than 20 years of work, the extension of the harbour railway to the APM Terminals in Gothenburg, Sweden, has now been completed, with the last kilometre of the double tracks being laid on 25 March. The upgrade has tripled the railway’s capacity from 80 to up to 240 trains per day, ATM said.

The project was started in 2020 with an investment of SEK 1.7 billion (EUR 1.5 billion). It allows to transport more goods sustainably and eliminates the most critical route to and from the port.

The last stretch into the port has previously been a bottleneck, and through this expansion alone the port railway’s capacity is expected to increase by around 30%. 50% of all goods shipped to and from APM Terminals are transported by rail. (ben)
