A mixed picture in Hamburg

The Port of Hamburg witnessed different trends in the market In Q1/2022. While container handling rose by 1.8% to 2.2 million teu, total throughput declined by 2.8% to 31.2 million t.

The sanctions against Russia that came into effect in March have not yet shown their full impact. “Imports from Russian ports of coal, along with other bulk cargoes such as oil products, continued without being affected,” said Axel Mattern, CEO of Hamburg Marketing.

Railborne freight traffic again prospered with 12 million t shipped by the Port of Hamburg Railway (+1.6%). Totalling 22.5 million t, general cargo throughput in the first three months of the year rose by 0.6%, while, at 8.7 million t, bulk cargo handling throughput was 10.6% lower. (sh)
