Airfreight vaulting to nearly 1 million t in Hong Kong
Air cargo throughput at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) registered remarkable year-on-year growth of 10.4% to 397,000 t in March. The double-digit growth in cargo throughput last month was driven mainly by exports and transhipments, which were up by 10% and 17% respectively from a year ago. During the month under review, cargo throughput to/from mainland China and North America improved most significantly compared to other key regions. The increase in air cargo in March was also consistent with past seasonal trends, albeit with larger growth rates than usual this year.
"In Q1/2014, HKIA handled 997,000 t of cargo, representing 5.3% year-on-year growth. These robust increases in March and Q1 continue to surpass our 20-year forecast, and show that the need to expand the airport is even more pressing to meet the demand," said Stanley Hui Hon-Chung, CEO of Airport Authority Hong Kong.
