Another step towards zero-emission locomotives

Wabtec, G&W and the Carnegie Mellon University are partnering to build a more sustainable freight transportation network in North America by 2030. The aim is to power locomotive fleets with alternative energy sources for a zero-emissions freight rail network pilot and advance current signalling systems and digital technologies.

Carnegie Mellon University will develop the engineering technologies and G&W’s short line Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad will pilot them. Wabtec is already trialling the world’s first heavy-haul battery-electric locomotive and now wants to accelerate the shift to alternative clean energy solutions, through zero-emission hydrogen-powered locomotives.
