Aussies remember Smithy
Australia's Alliance Airlines has unveiled a jet with special livery to salute Sir Charles Kingsford Smith (or "Smithy" as he was affectionately known at the time) and his brave crew who completed the first transpacific flight 90 years ago.
On 9 June 1928, Smithy and his crew landed their Fokker VII/3m at Eagle Farm. It was almost exactly where the Alliance Airlines offices and maintenance facilities are today, at what is now Brisbane airport. Smithy’s Fokker was one of the earliest Fokker aircraft to ever visit Australia.
In commemoration of this historic event, Alliance, which is the world’s largest operator of Fokker aircraft, has partnered with Newstead Brewing to offer its exclusive Alliance Airlines beer - "Smithy’s FGB" golden ale. (ah)
