BAR achieves carbon payback

BAR Technologies has validated that its WindWings system achieves a carbon payback in under six months, according to a lifecycle assessment (LCA) conducted as part of the MarineShift360 impact accelerator programme. The WindWings technology, which reduces fuel consumption by approximately 1.5 t per wing each day, effectively cuts CO2 emissions by 4.7 t daily on global shipping routes, marking a significant advancement in maritime sustainability.

The LCA, aligned with ISO 14044 standards, highlights that 44% of embedded emissions stem from metalwork, prompting BAR Technologies to shift its procurement toward recycled DH32 steel produced using electric arc furnace processes. CEO John Cooper emphasised that the findings demonstrate WindWings not only offers immediate environmental benefits but is also commercially viable, helping the shipping industry meet urgent decarbonisation goals. The company calls on the maritime sector to adopt evidence-based approaches toward sustainability and encourages participation in the next MarineShift360 impact accelerator to promote rapid changes across the industry.
