Bayernhafen reports balanced results for 2018

The Bayernhafen group (Bavaria, Germany) transhipped a total of 8.8.million t of cargo onto inland barges and trains in FY 2018. Because of low water levels on the Rhine and Danube, the amount of cargo transferred onto barges at the group’s six terminals dropped by 21.2% to 2.518 million t.

However, a large part of this decline could be compensated by rises in railfreight: the 6.31 million t transported by rail represent a 7.5% increase compared to 2017. The group invested EUR 26 million in 2018 into preparing the ground for new hubs and upgrading rail and waterway infrastructures, as part of a long-term project.

A sloping river bank was converted into a perpendicular bank in Bamberg. In Passau, the loading sidings on the quay were extended from almost 600 m to 880 m, the capacities for temporary silo storage were increased fivefold, and a new mobile harbour crane was installed. This crane can handle heavy cargo up to 120 t, such as entire wind power plants. (kd)
