Berlin airport - well - something's happening there!

Airfreight in Berlin still has headwinds to cope with more than six months after the grounding of Air Berlin. The city’s airports, Schönefeld (SXF) and Tegel (TXL), registered 5,445 t of cargo in the first two months of 2018, a steep 28.7% drop year-on-year. TXL only handled 3,774 t (-39.9%), but SXF succeeded in raising volumes to 1,671 t, a substantial 23.2% increase - albeit from a low starting point.

Nearby, construction work on the German capital’s new airport is proceeding apace and the opening date is currently set for October 2020. As the facility has not been opened, it can host the 12th edition of the Airport Night Runs tomorrow evening (14 April).

The major event will see more than 6,000 athletes run around the terminal, along the piers, under the passenger boarding bridges, as well over and around the illuminated southern runway and apron. (ah)
