BHP shifts copper to rail
BHP’s subsidiary Copper SA has awarded four contracts worth USD 1.5 billion to Aurizon for a new rail, road and port logistics solution supporting the Olympic Dam, Carrapateena and Prominent Hill mines.
According to the company the deal aims to shift over 11,000 truck movements annually from South Australian roads, replacing 13 million km of freight transported by lorries with integrated rail, port and road logistics.
"It’s about delivering South Australian resources to the world", said Anna Wiley, BHP asset president at Copper SA. She added that global demand for copper is on the rise. "With two-thirds of Australia’s high-quality copper resources, South Australia is uniquely positioned to meet it." (js)
