Bremen: facelift for Oslebshauser lock

The Oslebshauser lock that provided access to Bremen's industrial port for 110 years is to be upgraded in a joint project coordinated by the German port operator, Bremenports. The scheme will create a basis for around 50 companies with some 3,000 employees.

The lock has already undergone major conversions over its many years in service. At present the lock gates are being refurbished and adapted to new high water forecasts. The lock’s control system will also be fully overhauled next year.

On top of that, it is planned to implement a project entitled "Tide2Use", which foresees the use of modern information and communication technologies within the port environment. The energy efficiency should be stepped up by linking ship traffic, lock operations and the pumping stations in an end-to-end “smart” manner. (kd)
