BVL study on e-commerce packaging

A BVL e-commerce working group, together with the consultancy 4flow, has published a study on sustainable packaging in the online retail sector.

The analysis highlights how packaging impacts supply chain costs and emissions, examining automation potential and re-use models for the full life cycle. Results show that switching from standard cartons to paper or plastic mailers can reduce packaging-related emissions by up to 80%.

Optimising size also offers savings, as current empty-space ratios average 30–40%. Packaging machines can cut costs by up to 50%, while tailored solutions, including shipping in original product packaging, can provide both a sustainable and cost-effective option for suitable items, according to BVL.
