By when will MSC surpass Maersk?

The run for capacity enters the next phase. Geneva-based Mediterranean Shipping (MSC) is heavily investing in its fleet. This move concerns second-hand tonnage as well as new orders for 24,000 teu vessels.

According to Clarksons, MSC just recently acquired the 1,850 teu “Acacia Makoto”, the 1,730 teu “Voronezh” and the 1,732 teu RHL Aurora.

MSC's partner in the 2M alliance, Maersk, is pursuing a strategy focused on profitability, not quantity, as the Copenhagen-based maritime agency Sea-Intelligence puts it. MSC, which is ranked second in the fleet tables since the year 2004, may arrive on top in the course of this year. (cd)
