CMA CGM expands into UK rail freight

CMA CGM has announced the acquisition of Freightliner UK intermodal logistics, one of Britain’s largest rail freight operators. The deal includes rail and road activities, inland terminals and the Freightliner brand, and is due to close in early 2026, subject to regulatory approval. Other Freightliner entities in continental Europe will remain under their current ownership.

CMA CGM said the purchase strengthens its intermodal services in Europe and supports the shift from road to rail. Freightliner will continue as a standalone multi-user operator. By integrating UK rail expertise with CMA CGM’s maritime and logistics network, the group aims to develop combined sea–rail–road solutions and enhance port–hinterland connectivity. "The Intermodal business will become a stand-alone business within CMA CGM’s portfolio, with opportunities to collaborate with other arm’s length CMA CGM companies", said Tim Shoveller, CEO of Freightliner group.
