Construction giant investing in autonomous vehicles

Volvo and Holcim Switzerland have entered into a collaboration agreement to jointly test and further develop autonomous electric haulers for limestone quarries.

The battery-electric units now being tested mark a groundbreaking step in the industry. Not only are they quieter and more sustainable than conventional haulers, they’re also safer - they’re the world’s first commercially available CE-certified electric autonomous transport solution for the quarry and cement industries, the manufacturer said.

The project is part of Holcim’s digitalisation initiative, which aims to test automation technologies, robotics and artificial intelligence in cement production. (ben)
