Container index: the only way is up

The container throughput index of the RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Institute of Shipping Economics and Logistics (ISL) rose by 2.3 points (seasonally adjusted) to 128.6 in May, according to the current flash estimate. The value of the Chinese ports' index retained the previous month's upward trend, increasing by 5.8 points to 137.8.

According to the revised data, global container throughput is clearly still on a high, as it has been since the beginning of this year. In the Chinese ports in particular, throughput saw a major improvement compared to the previous month, when it more or less stagnated.

The North Range Index is also showing a significant upturn, climbing by 117.00 (revised) to 120.2. Economic recovery in the euro area continues. The RWI/ISL container throughput index for June 2021 will be published on 27 July 2021. (cd)
