Cosco tests the NSR
The Northern Sea Route (NSR), linking Europe to Asia by the Arctic Sea, is becoming more popular for commercial ships. The latest carrier to jump on the band wagon is the Chinese Cosco Group, which recently sent a 19,000 dwt multipurpose vessel from Dalian to Rotterdam. The group said the route along Russia's northern seaboard is some 7,000 km shorter than the one via the Suez Canal.
Last year 46 ships used the NSR, whilst in 2011 it was 46 and 4 in 2010. The trend is causing deep concerns for many environmental campaigners who fear the consequences of a possible accident in the area. However, some other people argue that the cut in journey time helps save emissions.
