Difficult year for air freight north of the Alps

Cargo volumes at Munich airport (photo), Germany's second-biggest aviation hub, were down in 2019. The 331,000 t of airfreight handled in 2019 represented a 5.7% yoy decrease.

Zurich airport reports an 8.4% decrease in freight volume in 2019 versus 2018. During the year under review, a total of 451,000 t of freight passed through Switzerland’s biggest airport.

Meanwhile in Austria, volumes at the three airports following Vienna also fell: Totalling 46,000 t, Linz airport took second place while losing 10.7% compared to 2018. With a throughput of 18,000 t, Graz airport limited its decrease to 1.3%. Salzburg airport, after two years of double-digit growth, lost heavily (-18.6%), due only partly to the fact that the runway was closed for several weeks in 2019. (ah)
