DNV awards AiP for ammonia-powered mega-boxship

DNV has awarded an approval in principle (AiP) to a consortium of MSC, Zhoushan Changhong International, and CIMC ORIC for their innovative 21,700 teu ammonia-dual fuelled ultra-large container ship design. This AiP signifies a major step towards zero-carbon mainline container shipping.

The vessel integrates the latest ammonia dual-fuel engines and oversized C-type ammonia tanks with a design that includes a vertical bow and energy-efficient features to improve fuel efficiency. Yin Xunbin, general manager of Cimc Oric, highlighted this design as a sustainable option for high-capacity shipping.

DNV's experts confirmed that the design meets international safety standards for ammonia fuel systems, laying the groundwork for further engineering studies and potential commercial construction. Norbert Kray, DNV senior vice president for Greater China, noted ammonia's role in the industry’s decarbonisation efforts and the project's focus on safety analyses as it progresses.
