DNVGL offering remote vessel inspection surveys

Norway-based DNV has announced that all DNV GL classed vessels are now able to utilise remote surveys for certain inspections. This dispenses with the need for a DNV GL inspector to board a vessel.

Instead, documentation, images, video (streaming or recordings), and input provided by the customer and crew can be sent to DNV via an online connection or video streaming link.

More than 1,000 remote surveys have been completed in a pilot by the direct access to technical experts (Date) units based in Høvik, Hamburg, Singapore, Houston and Piraeus. Technology testing began in 2017, with the first production pilots in June 2018.

The types of remote surveys now on offer include: occasional surveys that fall between periodical surveys, documentation-based surveys, testing and witnessing systems during normal operation, and surveys not ordered together with annual surveys.

Periodical surveys, such as a vessel’s annual survey, are not part of the remote survey programme as they require a surveyor onboard. (kd)
