"Eco Catania" enters Christian seafaring

The "Eco Catania" – the new ro-ro vessel delivered to the Grimaldi Group in early June - is ready for business, having celebrated its christening ceremony in the port of Catania recently. The fifth out of twelve hybrid ships belonging to the GG5G (Grimaldi Green 5th Generation) class, which the company ordered from the Chinese Jinling shipyard located in Nanjing, is now under sail.

Catania's metropolitan archbishop Monsignore Salvatore Gristina gave the vessel his blessing. The ceremony ended with the cutting of the ribbon by the Godmother Letizia Santonocito, Mayor Pogliese's wife, and the traditional breaking of the bottle.

Just as her four hybrid sister vessels already in service in the Mediterranean, the "Eco Catania" has a transport capacity of over 500 trailers and reduces carbon emissions by 50% compared to the earlier generations of ro-ro ships operated by the Grimaldi Group.

During its stays at the ports, the "Eco Catania" can use the electric energy stored by mega lithium batteries that can be recharged during the sea voyage with the help of shaft generators and 350 sqm of solar panels. (cd)
