Emirates uses technology to raise KBL capacity

Emirates Flight Operations has developed a new navigation technique that allows the airline to carry additional cargo into Kabul international airport (KBL) which is situated in a wide valley at an elevation of 1,750 m and is surrounded by mountains with a height of over 3,350 m.

The innovative missed-approach procedure developed by the airline, which operates a daily B777-300ER flight to KBL, has replaced an older technique that required cargo to be offloaded in Dubai during low-cloud or poor visibility weather conditions at the destination.

The new missed-approach navigation procedure with an easier climb gradient for KBL's runway 29 takes advantage of the B777's superior navigational accuracy.

Since its implementation three months ago, Emirates has carried an additional 250 t of cargo into KBL, leading to lower cost, more efficient operations including maintaining the "delivered as promised" customer commitment, without compromising on safety or regulatory requirements. (ah)
