Europe’s first digital points go into service
Trains that run on the Ore Mountains railway in southeastern Germany will be digitally controlled from Annaberg-Buchholz from now on.
The town is where Europe's first digital points system (DPS) has gone into service, heralding in the revolution in Deutsche Bahn’s control and safety technology. The DPS is the first step in the implementation of a next-generation innovative switching system.
Its use enables an operator's control commands to be transmitted digitally to points, signals and track contacts via network technology.
Moreover, it will now be possible to dispense with the sometimes several kilometre long individual cable bundles that every control element formerly required. (ben)
