FedEx expanding Tokyo gateway for freight growth

FedEx is set to expand its gateway at Tokyo’s Narita international airport (NRT), doubling its size to 8,500 sqm and adding two warehouse buildings. One will house an advanced parcel-sorting system tailored for cross-border e-commerce flows, while the other will serve as a dedicated freight handling hub with expanded space for import and export shipments. The phased opening is planned for 2026–2027.

"Improving efficiency at this key gateway in Japan is vital to adapt to today’s varied shipping requirements," said Kei Alan Kubota, managing director of FedEx Japan.

FedEx, one of the world’s largest express transport providers, currently runs hubs at NRT and Osaka Kansai airport (KIX), connecting Japanese customers to 220 global markets. In 2024, shipments at NRT grew by 4.5% year-on-year and by 25% compared to 2019, with freight categories such as machinery and food products accounting for the bulk of volumes. (ah)
