Fewer truck cross Swiss Alps
In H1/2018, the number of trucks crossing the Swiss Alps shrank by 2.5% to 477,000. Switzerland’s federal office of transport (FOT) said that transalpine HGV trips were at their lowest in any H1 since 1999, when the country’s traffic transfer act went into force.
The steepest decrease was seen on the Simplon corridor in H1/2018. The railway was unable to maintain the marked growth that it had achieved in the transalpine transport sector between 2013 and 2017.
The volume of goods that were conveyed in H1 was more or less on a par with that in H1/2017 (-0.2%). The stagnation was partially due to numerous construction sites on the network routes. (ben)
