Free zone taking shape at port of Trieste

A new inland logistics and industrial facility is being set up at the port of Trieste (Italy). The process to transfer the legal free zone status to Bagnoli della Rosandra (BDR) in the area owned by the intermodal terminal Interporto di Trieste has started.

The agreement between the Port Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea and the other participating institutions has been signed. Interporto di Trieste bought the BDR facility from Wärtsila Italia for around EUR 21 million in December 2017.

The BDR is comprised of 240,000 sqm of land, 74,000 sqm of which are covered, and a rail link to Aquilinia station. The complex will start to enjoy the benefits of its free zone status within days, even though the official inauguration of the facility is scheduled for February.

Interporto di Trieste began operating its new warehouses in June 2018, with the acquisition of additional traffic (coils and timber), and the start of transport and storage operations for local factories like Wärtsila Italia and Mangiarotti.

Even before the new regime was introduced, the facility moved 37,000 t of goods. When work on the railway line and station end at the beginning of 2020, Aquilinia will become the station for the whole industrial port. (kd)
