From Ireland to Puerto Rico for Crowley
Three new ship-to-shore container cranes that were built in Ireland are currently being shipped to their final destination. The units are scheduled for delivery to Crowley Puerto Rico Services’ Isla Grande Terminal in San Juan later in March.
The electric-powered cranes will be used to load and discharge containerized cargo for Crowley’s two liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered con-ro ships, entering service from H2/2017 onwards.
Crowley is investing more than USD 130 million of the USD 550 million total project cost in infrastructure improvements to its Isla Grande terminal, including a new pier, cranes, container staging areas, reefer plugs, truck gates, container handling equipment and more.
The Liebherr cranes - each 65 m high, with a capacity of 65 t and a 40 m outreach – will enhance Puerto Rico as a shipping and logistics hub for the Caribbean Basin. (kd)
