Heidelberg materials initiates low-emission shipping

Heidelberg Materials has announced the launch of a methanol-powered cement carrier in partnership with the Hartmann Group and the Norwegian NOx Fund. Scheduled to operate in Norway by Q1 2028, the vessel will primarily use green methanol, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 6,000 t annually, representing an 80% reduction compared to fossil fuel ships. Knut Omreng, director of logistics at Heidelberg Materials North Europe, emphasised the company's commitment to sustainable logistics.

The Hartmann Group was selected to design, own and operate the vessel. The green shipping programme facilitated the initiative, stressing the importance of cargo owners in requesting low-emission vessels. Financial support from the Norwegian NOx Fund, totalling 60 m Norwegian Krone, made the project feasible. This collaboration highlights how public and private sectors can work together to promote sustainable shipping solutions and advance the green transition in the maritime industry.
