Hybrid initiative in the ro-ro segment

New hybrid ships are set to enter the ro-ro segment. The logistics and shortsea shipping provider and terminal operator CLDN and the Finnish technology group Wärtsilä have jointly developed a new hybrid design for two new ro-ro vessels. The propulsion arrangement is such that the ships can operate as gas/diesel-mechanical vessels now, or as gas/diesel-electric vessels in future.

The vessels are being built at Hyundai Mipo Dockyards in South Korea. The two 234 m long vessels will each feature 8,000 lane metres of cargo space. They are part of CLDN’s fleet renewal programme aimed at drastically reducing emissions.

The ships are scheduled to be delivered in Q4/2024 and Q1/2025, and will operate in CLDN’s European network.

CLDN, which was founded in 1928 and is based in Luxembourg, has offices and operates ports in twelve European and Asian countries with a staff of nigh-on 4,000. (sh)
