Hydrogen for shunting locos in port areas?

Six partners from science and industry have set up a joint project to explore climate-neutral methods to operate shunting locomotives in the port. The aim is to replace the fuel used to power the shunting locomotives in the port areas of Bremen and Hamburg by hydrogen.

While passenger rail transport is already predominantly electrified and powered by green electricity, shunting locomotives - especially in port areas - cannot be electrified by overhead lines.

For various reasons, it is not yet possible to install batteries in the powerful shunting locomotives. Hydrogen technology could therefore be an interesting alternative. (ben)
