India's new traction has 6,000 t hauling capacity

Alstom has finished building the first all-electric locomotive at its Indian rolling stock facility in Madhepura (India), on schedule.

This first locomotive is part of a EUR 3.5 billion order for 800 electric double-section locomotives. The deal, which was signed in 2015, will make a substantial contribution to modernising the country’s rail infrastructure.

Thanks to its 12,000 horsepower, each double section locomotive, part of Alstom’s Prima locomotives family, has a hauling capacity of 6,000 t and speed of 120 km/h. This will allow heavier freight trains to be moved in a faster and safer manner across the country, thereby reducing congestion for passenger train services and freight, according to Alstom.
