Is railfreight in trouble?
A marked imbalance is making itself felt in the railfreight transport sector. Whilst 360 million t of goods are hauled by rail from warehouses to customers, there are about 1,000 vacant engine driver jobs in Germany.
Although new opportunities have been created for training to be an engine driver, the private railway company, Internationale Gesellschaft für Eisenbahnverkehr (IGE), underscored: “The measures are simply not enough to alleviate the lack of engine drivers.”
The IGE therefore calls for more investments in innovation and strengthening the industry by optimizing the infrastructure and establishing a uniform pricing policy, for example.
“The more lucrative a profession, the more people it attracts,” the IGE concluded. (ben)
