Kick-off for stage two of the UAE rail network

Stage two of the UAE’s national rail network to connect Ruwais (UAE) with Ghuweifat on the UAE border with Saudi Arabia has been initiated. At a ceremony, the state-owned railway operator Etihad Rail signed a contract with the JV of China’s CSCEC and South Korea’s E&C for package A of the rail project.

This AED 1.5 billion (EUR 0.36 billion) package includes all designing and building operations, civil engineering and track works for a 139-km stretch of standard-gauge double-track railway to the UAE border with Saudi Arabia.

Stage two, when completed, will run for 605 km from Ghuweifat to the port of Fujairah (UAE) and is part of the 1,200 km Etihad Rail project linking the UAE capital with the GCC-wide rail network. (ben)
