Mixed results for Strasbourg in 2022

The Ports de Strasbourg (PAS) on the Rhine saw its throughput dropping to 7.6 million t in 2022 compared to 2021. Overall results were affected by a 8.9 % decline in river traffic, due to low water periods in the summer and the impact of the war in Ukraine, which led to a shortage of available boats. Many units were mobilised for the transport of coal to Germany. This trend is observed  by all players involved in freight traffic along the Rhine. All modes of transport combined posted a total volume of 400,000 teu, an increase of 6% compared to 2021.

The Rhine Europe Terminals performed well. Rail traffic saw an upswing with an increase of 5.3% compared to 2021, i.e. 1.2 million t transported on the PAS rail network. The number of containers shipped by train almost reached the threshold of 80,000 teu, a rise of 12.5% compared to 2021.

PAS plans to invest more than EUR 45 million in several projects over the next three years, for instance to increase its capacity for handling containerised railfreight and to promote the modal shift to the river. (sh)
